NAG RUDRAKSHA:
Upwelling 02/12/2010
As the name indicates, this rudraksha looks like a snake or nag sitting. Basically, this rudraksha is for keeping and not for wearing. Rare of the rarest one. If auctioned in some prosperous community, it can fetch about a million dollars! In India, it costs not less than Rs. 500 000. Wherever this rudraksha is, there is no fear of snake bite, no scarcity of money, abundance, prosperity, fame, popularity, happy married life and no 'Kalah' on family fronts. That house is totally free from all negativity. This rudraksha can be kept at Pooja Sthal. Also useful for people who have the 'Kalsarpa Yog'. Power of Nag rudraksha is believed to eradicate all the evil effects of Kalsarpa Yog.
The Nag rudraksha carries symbolically the Rudra or Lord Siva, His consort Parvati and the Nag or serpa. The hood part is Nag, the thick base part, is the Avudaiyar or symbolically represents the goddess Parvathi, the central top part of the avudiar shows a small circular prominence representing Rudra or Siva.
Worship of Nag Rudraksha:
The most sacred five lettered appropriate mantra is OM NAMAH SIVAYA, the five letters of this sacred mantra, stand for the five-fold functions of Param-eswara – Creation, Preservation, Destruction, Veiling and Blessing. Likewise, these five letters also represent the pancha bhutas or the five elements, out of which the entire universe is made. The gross form is Namah Sivaya. Namah means ‘prostration’ and Sivaya means ‘unto Lord Siva’. The jiva or the embodied soul is the servant of Lord Siva from the gross or physical aspect. In its subtle form the mantra is chanted as Sivaya Namah. Here Namah represents the jiva; Siva represents the Paramatman and aya indicates the identity of the jiva and the Paramatman. During the month of Sivarathri and on Maha Sivarathri day, let us all chant this sacred mantra with three lobed bilwa leaves, 108 times and get the grace of Lord Siva.
Paraphrasing Sri Bilwashtaka Sloka, “I offer to Lord Siva, one tri-lobed bilva leaf, the embodiment of the three gunas (Satwa, Rajas and Tamas), three eyes of Lord Siva, the trident He holds in His hands that removes the sins committed by one in three lives.
The Sri Siva Panchakshara Sthotra first stanza gives fullness to the worship:
Nagendra haraya trilochanaya
Basmanga raghaya mahesaraya
Nithyaya suddhaya thigambaraya
Thusmy nagaraya namah Sivayah.
Rudraksha (also Rudraksh; Sanskrit: rudrākṣa ("Rudra-eyed")) is a large evergreen broad-leaved tree whose seed is traditionally used for prayer beads in Hinduism. The seed is borne by several species of Elaeocarpus, with E. ganitrus being the principal species used in the making of a bead chain or mala. Rudraksha is a Sanskrit compound word consisting of the name Rudra and ākṣa ("eye").[1][2] The specific epithet ganitrus is possibly taken from ganitri, the name for this species in Sundanese and Malay.
Rudraksha grows in the area from the Gangetic Plain in foothills of the Himalayas to South-East Asia, Indonesia, New Guinea to Australia, Guam, and Hawaii.[3] Rudraksha trees are also found in Nepal. Rudraksha seeds are covered by an outer shell of blue color when fully ripe, and for this reason are also known as blueberry beads. The blue colour is derived not from pigment but is structural.[4] It is an evergreen tree that grows quickly. Rudraksha Tree starts bearing fruit in three to four years. As the tree matures, the roots buttress rising up narrowly near the trunk and radiating out along the surface of the ground. (Wikipaedia)
Rudraksha is known to have magnetic properties and will align to north-south direction if suspended. This behavior is seen clearly when the rudraksha is placed on a coin on its axis and lightly touched on the other with another coin. This behavior is more pronounced in larger rudrakshas with more faces.
It is believed that this property of rudraksha has medicinal value.

Rudraksha Mala has been used by Hindus (as well as Sikhs and Buddhists) as rosary for thousands of years for meditation purposes to sanctify the mind, body and soul. The word Rudraksha is derived from Rudra (Shiva—the Hindu God of all living creatures) and aksha (eyes). One Hindu legend says that once Lord Shiva became so compassionate after seeing the sufferings of mankind that He could not help but shed a tear from his eye. This single tear from Shiva’s eye grew into the Rudraksha tree. Rudraksha fruit is green in color but turns black when dried. The central hard Rudraksha uni-seed has 1 to 108 faces and 2 to 21 faces Rudraksha are available, 1 faced Rudraksha is scarcely available, Rudraksha having 22 to 108 are almost extinct, there are people sayings that 22 to 108 faced Rudrakshas plants are still there at the foot hills of Himalayas and Manasa-sarover regions, but still no people has seen them.
The Mala is the most ancient form of a rosary, used to count the repetitions of a mantra, a prayer, as the spiritual self is trained. The cord running through the beads symbolizes the thread of Life. The Rudraksha Mala has been used by Hindus (as well as Sikhs and Buddhists) as rosary for thousands of years for meditation purposes to sanctify the mind, body and soul.
